Instructions for using the toolkit

Contents of the toolkit

The co-creation toolkit contains the results of a development project led by the City of Espoo’s Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development during 2022. The development project is part of the EU Horizon2020 funded SPARCS (Sustainable energy positive & zero carbon communities) project.

The toolkit presents a co-creation model and articulates the conditions, methods and actors involved in the design and implementation of a sustainable and smart urban area. The contents of the toolkit provide information and ideas on co-creation for those involved in regional development. Examples of urban systems include energy and mobility. Among the urban areas, Espoo’s Kera and Soukka have been used to test and formulate a model for co-creation based on the current state and experiences. The toolkit includes a set of articles (only one in English) that cover the same topic from different angles.

The toolkit is structured in such a way that it guides the user through the information with plenty of internal links.

Tips for familiarisation

You can start by reading the article to get an idea of what kinds of questions co-creation can answer in the current urban planning environment.

You can also explore the toolkit in the order of the content headings, which will first give you an idea of the prerequisites and starting points, followed by an in-depth presentation of the co-created solutions’ development through examples. At the end, you will find suitable methods and a structure for bringing together the parties involved in co-creation.

If you first want to see what the co-creation model is, take a look at chapter 1.1 and then chapter 3, in which the model is put into practice via the themes of regional sustainable energy and mobility.

If you are interested in co-creating sustainable energy or mobility, you can start directly from chapter 3. Solutions development

If you are interested in working methods suitable for co-creation, see chapter 4. If you need clarification on your role in co-creation, you can first read chapter 5, Roles of the operators
