Co-creation model Toolkit

For Sustainable and Smart Urban Areas

We have divided the toolkit into six themes that are key to the regional co-creation process. The section Prerequisites will introduce you to the process of developing a sustainable and smart city, its benefits and prerequisites. The section Identification of starting points describes issues that are important in the preparatory phase of co-creation more tangibly. The section Solutions development unfolds the co-creation process, especially in creating sustainable mobility and energy communities, as well as valuable co-creation experiences from the City of Espoo’s Kera area. Finally, we will present methods and roles, and explore the possibilities for co-creation further.

The co-creation model provides tools to support the development of different types of sustainable and smart urban areas in cooperation with city organisations, businesses, educational institutions, research institutes, other organisations and associations, and residents.

The model describes the processes, methods and practices that support the development of sustainable and smart urban areas and the implementation of urban solutions at regional level in cooperation with different stakeholders. The co-creation model was shaped by the lessons learned from the development of the City of Espoo’s Kera region in Finland and the views of a wide network of actors.

The model is applicable to all urban areas and urban systems identified for development.

The model was developed by the City of Espoo in cooperation with WSP Finland and Korkia Consulting. The model was developed during 2022 in cooperation with various stakeholders. On this website, you can access the toolkit and find approaches for your own urban development projects.
